Island of the Sequined Love Nun Chapter 27~28

27 Young lady Talk Sepie washed the pilot's hair in a bowl with beat coconut and harsh water. She had been dealing with the oblivious white man for two days and it was beginning to get dull. She was mispel of the lone rangers' home, and washing and helping a debilitated and stinky white man was not part of her expected set of responsibilities. This was ladies' work. There are legends in the islands, and a portion of the elderly people men swear they are valid, that the ladies who administration the single guys' homes, the mispels, were taken to the mystery island of Maluuk, known distinctly to the high pilots, where they were prepared in the craft of pleasuring a man. Following quite a while of preparing, a mispel was required to finish an assessment before she was permitted to come back to her home island to assume control over the obligation of keeping an eye on the sexual needs of the men of the single guys' home. The test? She was sent into the sea with a ready earthy colored coconut grasped between her thighs, and there she glided, in substantial surf, for the whole circuit of the tides. Should the coconut pop free or the mispel contact it with her hands, she bombed the test (in spite of the fact that there was some breathing space in case of shark assault). It is said that the inward thighs of the mispels of old were as solid as net link. The second piece of the test required the young lady to locate a fragile dragonfly orchid with a straight stem, and keeping in mind that her instructors looked on, she would bring down herself over the bloom until it vanished within her, at that point rise again following a couple of moments, leaving the st em unbent and the petals unbruised. The mispel held a place of respect, regarded and loved among the is-landers. She was not required to do housekeeping, cooking, or weaving, and keeping in mind that different ladies worked in taro fields from the time they could walk, a mispel was permitted to snooze in the shade, moderating her vitality for her nighttime obligations. A mispel frequently finished her voyage through obligation by wedding a man of high status. No shame followed her into wedded life, and she would be searched out to the furthest limit of her days by different ladies for exhortation on dealing with men. Sepie, be that as it may, had not been picked as a result of any extraordinary aptitude, nor had she gone through any enthusiastic concubinal training camp. Sepie had been set apart for mispel from the snapshot of her menses, when she rose up out of the ladies' home with her lavalava tied a piece excessively high and indicating a lot cappuccino thigh, her skin scoured with copra until she flickered all finished, and her bosoms sparkling like finished wooden tea cups. She had painted her lips with the juice of squashed berries and peppered her long dark hair with scores of sweet jasmine blooms. She snickered playfully within the sight of the considerable number of men, moved perilously near the untouchable of addressing them openly, gambled beatings by declining to tumble to her knees when her male cousins passed, and approached her tasks with a wiggly vitality that had prompted more than one of the occupied town young men to drop out of a breadfruit tree during harvest. (She broke lo wer legs just as hearts.) Sepie was all laugh and bother, a lethargic young lady who exceeded expectations at relaxation, a characteristic at summoning and denying want, a wet dream conceded. At fifteen she moved to the lone wolves' home and had lived there for a long time. When Malink and the men got the flyer and the man the dress to her, she realized she was in a difficult situation. â€Å"Take care of them,† Malink said. â€Å"Feed them. Help to make them strong.† Sepie kept her head bowed while Malink talked, however when he completed she grasped his hand and drove him into the single men's home, signaling to different men to lay the flyer and his companion on the ground outside. The men grinned among themselves, imagining that old Malink was going inside to get an extraordinary kindness from the mispel. What, truth be told, he was accepting was an ass biting. â€Å"Why don't you take them to your home, Malink? I don't need them here.† â€Å"It's a mystery. On the off chance that my significant other and little girls discover they are here, at that point everybody will know.† â€Å"I'm the one in particular who can leave well enough alone in the single guys' home. Take them to old Sarapul's home. Nobody goes there.† â€Å"He needs to eat them.† Malink couldn't recollect ever argueing with a lady and he wasn't at all readied for it. â€Å"You're boss. Advise him not to. I won't cook for them. In the event that I feed them, they will poo. I'm not going to clean it up.† â€Å"Sepie, what will you do when you wed and have youngsters? You should do these things at that point. I am asking you as your boss to do these things.† â€Å"No,† Sepie said. Malink moaned. â€Å"I am requesting that you do these things in light of the fact that these men have been sent to us by Vincent.† Sepie didn't have a clue what to state. She had heard the Sky Priestess berate Malink before the individuals, however she had been increasingly worried about losing espresso and sugar for a month than with the real offense. â€Å"You will advise the men to cook for them?† â€Å"Yes.† â€Å"And they will convey them to the sea shore and wash them in the event that they shit?† â€Å"I will let them know. If you don't mind Sepie.† No man had ever said â€Å"please† to her previously, not to mention the boss. It was anything but a civility that ladies merited. Just because she understood how urgent Malink truly was. â€Å"And you will advise Abo to wash his dick when it is his turn.† â€Å"What does that have to do with this?† â€Å"He is stinky.† â€Å"I will tell him.† â€Å"And you will advise Favo to stop making me put dabs in his ass.† â€Å"Favo does that?† â€Å"He said he took in it from the Japanese.† â€Å"Really? Favo?† â€Å"Yes.† â€Å"But he's old, and he has a spouse and numerous grandchildren.† â€Å"He says it makes his lance stronger.† â€Å"He does? That is to say, does it work?† Malink had quickly overlooked why he was here. â€Å"I don't care for it. It is malicious and unclean.† â€Å"You're discussing my old companion Favo, isn't that so? He's the one you're talking about?† â€Å"I disclosed to him just single men were assume to remain here, however he says his significant other doesn't get him. His hands resemble the skin of a shark.† â€Å"What sort of beads?† â€Å"Tell him,† Sepie said. â€Å"Okay,† Malink said in English. At that point to himself he stated: â€Å"Old Favo.† He shook his head as he left the lone wolves' home. â€Å"Beads.† Sepie watched him go, wishing that she had requested more favors. Outside the men were smiling when Malink ventured into the evening glow. He hitched up his undergarment and turned away his eyes from theirs. â€Å"Take them inside. You should cook and clean for them. Try not to let the lady do it. It is excessively significant for her.† As the men conveyed Tuck and Kimi into the lone rangers' home, Favo wandered up to Malink. â€Å"How was it?† Malink took a gander at his old companion and saw just because that Favo wore a long string of ivory dots around his neck. â€Å"I need to return home now,† Malink said. Sepie was, by and by, cleaning up the wooden floor where the pilot had peed on himself, when she heard the other one represent the first run through. The men had propped the Filipino up in the corner, where he had sat drinking the coconut milk and fish stock that she had been filling the pilot, however aside from a couple of snorts when he advanced outside to pee, the man in the dress had hushed up for two days. Sepie had figured out how to disregard him. He didn't smell as awful as the pilot, and she kind of enjoyed his blossomed dress. She'd said a supplication to Vincent for a dress simply like it. â€Å"Where is Roberto?† the Filipino said. Sepie hopped. It didn't shock her so much that he had spoken, however that he had communicated in her language. Despite the fact that the words were cut, the route somebody from Iffallik or Satawan may talk. â€Å"He's privilege here,† she said. â€Å"Your companion smells. You should take him outside and wash him in the sea.† â€Å"That's not Roberto. That is Tucker. Roberto is shorter.† Kimi slithered over to Tuck and laid his hand on the flyer's temple. â€Å"He has awful fever. You have medicine?† â€Å"Aspirin,† Sepie said. Malink had given her a jug of the tablets to smash into the flyer's stock, yet after he choked on the principal portion she had quit offering it to him. â€Å"He is more wiped out than anti-inflamatory medicine. He needs a specialist. You have a doctor?† â€Å"We have the Sorcerer. He does our medication. He was a specialist before the Sky Priestess came.† Kimi took a gander at her. â€Å"What island is this?† â€Å"Alualu.† â€Å"Ha! We need to get specialist for Tucker. He owes me 500 dollars.† Sepie's eyes went wide. No big surprise he wears such a fine dress. 500 dollars! She stated, â€Å"The boss says I must be mystery about this man. Everybody realizes he is here. The young men become inebriated and talk. Yet, I can't get the doctor.† â€Å"Why would you say you are dealing with him? You are only a girl.† â€Å"I am not only a young lady. I am mispel.† Kimi sneered. â€Å"There are no mispels anymore.† Sepie tossed down the cloth she was utilizing to wipe the floor. â€Å"What do you know? You are a man in a dress, and I don't trust you have 500 dollars.† â€Å"It was a decent dress before the typhoon,† Kimi said. â€Å"Wash-and-wear. No laundry Sepie gestured as though she recognized what he was discussing. â€Å"It is a really dress. I like it.† â€Å"You do?† Kimi picked at the squashed creases around his legs. â€Å"It's only an old thing I got in Manila. It was marked down. You truly like it?† Sepie didn't comprehend. Among her kin, on the off chance that you respected another person's ownership, habits bound them to offer it to you. How could this senseless man communicate in her language and still not have the foggiest idea about her traditions. Furthermore, he wa

Social Business Paper Essay

The main issue is whether Enzo had a legitimate agreement with Gina when she requested that he collect and care of her vehicle until she gets back from dynamic military obligation. As pay, Gina gave Enzo the option to utilize the vehicle while in his consideration and he concurred. It gives the idea that for this situation they had a substantial agreement. There was a legitimate offer and acknowledgment by the two gatherings. There was thought by the two gatherings for the advantages. The verbal agreement was for a legal reason and the two gatherings had all the earmarks of being grown-ups of sound psyche. With this issue of an agreement, the two gatherings appear to be applicable to the four components for which Enzo will deal with Gina’s vehicle while she is away and until she returns. The subsequent issue is whether Enzo and Gina had a genuine agreement with Time Warner Cable since Enzo would invest the greater part of his energy at Gina’s loft. For this situation Gina and Enzo have a reciprocal agreement with Time Warner. A respective agreement is the point at which you have two gatherings that every make a guarantee to accomplish something. In this situation, Gina and Enzo marked an agreement that permitted them to have HD in the condo for a year while they pay Time Warner $50 every month for that administration. Taking everything into account, there is a legitimate official between the two gatherings. The third issue is whether Enzo reserved any option to sell Gina’s vehicle on eBay after she withdrew for the military. Enzo produced Gina’s mark to permit the vehicle title to go to Mr. Purchaser. After the deal, Enzo arranged the check to Mr. Proprietor for lease. After these exchanges were done, Gina got back from the military and now has recorded a claim against Enzo and Mr. Purchaser. Mr. Purchaser presently needs his cash back and is suing Enzo and Mr. Proprietor. There are a few issues with these depictions. Above all else, it is illicit for Enzo to manufacture Gina’s signature. It’s a void-capable agreement in light of the fact that the law licenses one gathering to end the agreement because of the unlawful reason for the exchange. Along these lines, Mr. Purchaser ought to get a full discount for the offer of the vehicle or follow compensatory harms in which the measure of cash is the thing that the court accepts ought to be reestablished. Gina has the privilege to follow Enzo with a common claim. Purposeful torts are the point at which somebody is hurt by a deliberate activity. That is actually what Enzo did for this situation. He deliberately fashioned Gina’s signature and realized he would have the option to sell the vehicle and get the assets. Mr. Proprietor ought to need to give the assets back and afterward could settle on a choice on whether to seek after a claim against Enzo or attempt to work an arrangement out with Gina. The fourth issue is whether Enzo can void the offer of the vehicle since he is legitimately a minor and can void agreements. To oblige the conceivable void-capable agreement, Enzo, contingent upon judgment, needs to petition for Chapter 7 insolvency and release the obligation. Luckily for Enzo, a void-capable agreement is feasible in light of him being a minor. For this situation, since he is a minor, the agreement is void and the obligation around him for that exchange could be dropped. We would utilize the standard of unenforceable understanding. With this law, the gatherings may goal, however rule of law forestalls the agreement in light of the fact that Enzo is a minor. Taking everything into account, no chapter 11 would need to be recorded as a result of the voided agreement. In the fifth and last issue, after Gina recorded the claim against Enzo, he began to annoy her by appearing at see her at the loft and work alongside calls. These were undermining signals and requested that she drop the claim. This is a case of tort law on account of attack. Ambush is the point at which the respondent does some demonstration that makes the offended party dread an up and coming battery. All in all, this definition absolutely clarifies how Gina felt when Enzo undermined her to drop the claim against him. At long last, Enzo utilized a few contrasts against the people. Models included fashioning Gina’s signature, having the option to void an agreement because of unenforceable understanding and compromising Gina by methods for attack. Gina has the option to document a common claim in the wake of being compromised by Enzo and what he might do to her.

Romance A Dramatic Convention from Shakespeare to My Fair Lady - Literature Essay Samples

Most writers find it extremely difficult to convey the feeling of love via the written word. In fact, many people feel inspired to write by that challenge alone. Love cannot be summed up in a sentence or a paragraph, let alone a song or a poem. Nobly, a few writers choose to write plays and musicals trying to sum up those elusive feelings of love, lust, and everything in between. Through the ages, a few dramatic conventions came into being in order to try to assist writers in their quest for describing love. In Broadway musicals, such as My Fair Lady, for instance, the plot must include a primary and secondary love story to keep the audience in rapture. The idea of the love triangle (or, in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a more extended love square) has also helped a lot of writers track their characters’ desires. Some plots, such as that of George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, attempt to describe love in a more simple way by simply focusing on the relationship between two complex and infinitely human characters. When tracing all of these narratives, a metamorphoses occurs: the narrative structure that authors use has varied over time, and no form seems to be better than the other, as they all exist in their own worlds, just as lovers do. Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, plays with the idea of the love triangle by making it a love square with four characters rather than just three for the sake of symmetry. Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander all switch partners in the play multiple times in a comedic stab at how love, with all its complexities, can really be rather simple. Although each of these pairings in the love square have their own intricacies in their specific relationships to one another, Shakespeare’s extension of the classic love triangle really functions as the primary love story in the play. It almost seems like hyperbole when all of the characters almost become one at the end through a joint wedding in which their names are barely even distinguished from one another, with Demetrius referring to them all collectively as, â€Å"fair lovers† who are â€Å"fortunately met †¦ For in the temple, by and by, with us/ These couples shall eternally be knit† (Shakespeare 4.I.177-81). The wedding scene in particular binds these four individual people into one, more symbolic entity, that being the normal primary romance in the play. Dramatically speaking, all romantic plays and musicals seem to agree about the fact that there should be one primary romance going on to keep the audience focused and engaged. Shakespeare’s variation of the love triangle that uses four people instead of three heightens the audience’s interest even more than just two characters would, as these characters are all complex and relatable in their own ways. However, their love feels more subtle than that of more eccentric characters such as Titania and Bottom, which might be why their wedding was so overarching and vague about their persons. At most weddings, the ceremony highlights individual characteristics about each aspect of the couple. However, in this wedding, all four of them are consistently referred to under one categorical term, such as, â€Å"fair lovers† or â€Å"these couples.† The two relationships that might as well be one in the love square are meant to represent a normal and uncomplicated type of love that those in Shakespeare’s time admired. Titania and Bottom, however, have a far more complex secondary love story going on here. In fact their story seems secondary because it might not be a story of love at all, rather it seems like a story of fantasy and forbidden perverted passion. Their story has to be less central because of its overtly sexual nature and how sexual media was far less fit for direct consumption than romantic media was (although Shakespeare was known to push these cultural boundaries). For example, Bottom and Titania are not equals in their story. Bottom is a mortal as ugly and plain as an ass (his transformation signifies their differences further) and Titania is not only a queen but also a fairy queen, which represents their class differences. Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena are all of similar social statuses, so their love does not feel as forbidden as Titania’s and Bottom’s attraction to one another. The most unconventional aspect of Titania and Bottom’s relationship mig ht be how attracted to Bottom Titania feels. For instance, when Bottom sings nonsense, Titania asks, â€Å"what angel wakes me from my flow’ry bed?/ †¦ I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again./ Mine ear is much enamored of thy note† (Shakespeare 3.I.112-22). In this quotation, Titania not only claims that Bottom, who literally looks like an ass, seems like an â€Å"angel,† but also acknowledges that he is, in fact, a â€Å"mortal.† Just these two words suggest how wrong it seems that Titania finds herself attracted to Bottom. Her desires seem even more perverse when they turn out as overtly sexual, with Titania finishing the scene with lines such as, the moon, methinks, looks with a wat’ry eye,/ And when she weeps, weeps every little flower,/ Lamenting some enforced chastity./ Tie up my lover’s tongue, bring him silently (Shakespeare 3.I.177-80). Perhaps Titania herself laments her own â€Å"enforced chastity† and ties up her â€Å"lover’s tongue† so that they do not need to speak about her forbidden desires. Her attraction towards Bottom, someone so much socially lower than her in every way, must feel especially shameful to her. Although this narrative has far more depth to it than the ordinary and expected story of the primary extended love triangle, Shakespeare, like Titania, faced societal obligations to keep the more eccentric love stories a bit subtler than that of his main characters. In a somewhat similar fashion to the primary and secondary love stories in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, My Fair Lady follows the Broadway structure of having a clear cut primary and secondary love story with songs for each. However, clearly modern theatrics have changed a bit, as in My Fair Lady, the secondary romance feels like the more conventional and less complicated one. This relationship of Doolittle and his bride is not nearly as unexpected as that of Titania and Bottom. After all, in the song â€Å"Get Me to the Church on Time,† Doolittle asks the townspeople to get him â€Å"to the church on time,† as he drinks too much to count on himself making it to his own wedding. While this song means to be comical, it has a rather serious element to it as well. This secondary relationship feels less complex than the secondary relationship in the earlier work of Shakespeare. Maybe the shift to more focus on the primary relationship in theatre and make that one more nuanced was just another way to entertain audiences. Or perhaps more modern writers felt more freedom to explore more controversial relationship troubles in an upfront manner. Eliza and Higgins, for instance, have an extremely complicated primary relationship. Similarly to Bottom and Titania, they are entirely different people, from different classes and different positions (student and teacher, mortal and fairy). However, My Fair Lady’s plot focuses more on this complex and unexpected type of relationship than A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s plot does. Although both relationships are doomed, the characters in MFL try to work through their disappointment and sadness through song, making the relationship seem more complicated as the plot digs deeper into the content and context of what ends up happening with Eliza and Higgins. For instance, the song â€Å"Without You† stands to complicate the plot’s resolution: the end of the relationship between Higgins and Eliza. Not only are they parting ways in this song, but they are also explaining each and every reason why they find that action so poignant, with lyrics such as, there’ll be spring every year without you †¦ and there still will be rain/On the plain down in Spain, / Even that will remain/ Without you/ I can do/ Without you (Lerner II.213). Although the lyrics do literally have Eliza and Higgins saying â€Å"I can do without you† to each other, the fact that they detail so many different events that they will have to do without one another gives the song a rather melancholy tone. For instance, throughout the song they realize all the events they will not be in each other’s lives for, that being circumstances such as â€Å"spring every year without you.† Although this song and the character’s emotions for one another might be less complex than Titania and Bottom’s romance, these primary characters are far more complex than the primary romance characters in Midsummer, perhaps because they do not get the same happy ending, which complicates a story line. Oddly enough, although George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion falls in between Midsummer and My Fair Lady chronologically, it actually goes far outside the boundaries for typical theatrical relationships. Pygmalion focuses primarily on Eliza and her relationship with Higgins, and actually makes the entire relationship equally as complex as two couples. However it seems like a less well structured play than the other two especially in terms of romance, perhaps because Shakespearean drama and Broadway musicals have very specific genre conventions. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a classic example of a Shakespearean comedy, a very structured type of play. For instance, The main characteristics in Shakespeares Comedies are: A struggle of young lovers to overcome problems, often the result of the interference of their elders, There is some element of separation and reunification, Mistaken identities, often involving disguise, A clever servant, Family tensions that are usually resolved in the end Complex, interwoven plot-lines, Frequent use of puns and other styles of comedy (Alliemacb) Shakespeare structures his comedies this way for a reason he found the best formula for keeping his audiences interested in what he had to say in his comedies. Shaw did not have such a clear formula, which explains why his romance plot in Pygmalion needed so much adjustment when Lerner and Loewe turned it into My Fair Lady, which one could argue is more well known than Pygmalion. For instance, Musicals are almost always about pairs, complementary halves of a whole, initially at odds because of age, race, ethnicity, customs, attitudes, values, backgrounds, social status, manners, prejudices, competence, work ethic, appearance, or desires. Musicals often treat courtship, the attempt to convince another to adopt one’s attitudes or to adapt one’s own actions to another, as a metaphor for life itself. (Kowalke) Shaw’s plays sometimes have a relatively loose sense of structure, which explains why the exposition of Eliza and Higgins’ romance was so messy and drawn out. For instance, because of all the plot that Lerner dedicates to Higgins and Eliza’s relationship, the audience gets to know so much more about the intricacies of their relationship than they would in any Shakespeare play or Broadway musical. At the start of the play, Shaw even describes something as tangential as Higgins’ opinions about women, writing, A woman who utters such depressing and disgusting sounds has no right to be anywhere—no right to live. Remember that you are a human being with a soul and the divine gift of articulate speech: that your native language is the language of Shakespeare and Milton and The Bible; and dont sit there crooning like a bilious pigeon (1.125). Unlike a Shakespeare stock character or a ingenue in a Broadway musical would never have time to develop such convoluted even if bigoted views on something as specific as language or gender. Thus Eliza and Higgins have a more complex relationship than the other couples because Lerner devotes so much of the plot to developing their characters. By the time Eliza and Higgins have their final meeting, Shaw has given the audience such a complex portrayal of not only both of their characters but also their relationship that their ending becomes ambiguous. Eliza leaves, then Higgins asks to no one, â€Å"Eliza? Where the devil are my slippers?† (Shaw II.219). Because of Eliza and Freddy and the strange dichotomy of their teacher student relationship as well as their originally differing classes, the audience can only guess at what becomes of them, which explains why My Fair Lady was altered so much plotwise. An ambiguous ending was less possible in the musical because due to the conventions of musicals there is not as much time to set up such complex characters that would warrant an ambiguous ending. The three different conventions of these narratives each add to the goals of each of their individual genres. Shakespeare’s comedy structure with his confused lovers let him tackle more provocative subject matter in terms of Titania and Bottom in a crafty and subtle way. Although the characters are more complex in Pygmalion than My Fair Lady, the character’s in Shaw’s plays serve to be complex and relatable while musicals are more for placid entertainment. These observations are significant because they show how much theatre conventions have changed in a back and forth manner over not only decades but also centuries. Works Cited Alliemacb. The Civil War is indisputably a significant event in American history. As we know, the war was mainly fought over the dividing issue of slavery with the North opposed to slavery while the South for it. Of course, the Civil War was a result of a series of events. With the invention of the Cotton Gin by Eli Whitney, cotton fibers were quickly pulled from their seeds enabling for a faster production of cotton and as a result, prompted for an increase in slaves and institutionalized slavery. The industrialization of the North only added for a further demand for cotton and as a result, slaves. Slavery continued to play a large part of American society and politics as seen with the Missouri Compromise in an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed for the people of the territory to choose whether or not they would be a slave state or a free state. Furthermore, after the Fugitive Slave Act and the Dred Scott case, tensions between the Northern and Southern states, tensions rose greatly. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Women On The Civil Wars Front Line" essay for you Create order Finally, the South, yearning for succession, had its final straw after the Election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln won the Presidency and was an advocate for the halt of slavery and its abolition, and less than a month after Lincolns election, southern states began to secede from the Union. After a clear division of two governments, the Union and Confederacy, President Lincoln refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the Confederacy. After intentionally provoking Jefferson Davis into bombarding Ft. Sumter, Lincoln was able to legally declare an emergency without legislative approval, develop an army, and take action upon the Confederacy, initiating the Civil War. The war resulted in a bloodshed which took the lives of 624,511 Union and Confederate soldiers, formally ending and ceasing the existence of the Confederacy after Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith signed the surrender terms offered by the Union. When we discuss the Civil War, we often omit or underestimate the importance of women; however, the Civil War was not only the result of contributions from men on the front lines but women too. The thousands of women who were actively engaged in the war reserved their individual reasons to why they contributed to war efforts. Many were fueled by mere patriotism to their respective side or devotion to a cause. Faced with opposition or fenced by gender roles, women adjusted to their restrictions by serving in capacities, traditional and unique, or through other means. These capacities varied from humanitarian roles such as wartime nurses to espionage roles, collecting intelligence for the Union or Confederacy. Women were available as they ditched their roles of housekeepers instead of standing by. Among this, women were prime for particular wartime capacities for multiple reasons and characteristics. When all is considered, women involvement on the front during the war undoubtedly cont ributed to war efforts and arguably advancements. But why would women want to join such a war to begin with? Prior to the war, women remained restrained to gender norms which included the stereotypical household obligation. The social structure was clear and outlined; men and women understood their respective roles. However, as time progressed, women began ditching the confines of their home and household characteristic that is mainly for Northern women. Southern women were still shackled to household duties primarily as it was apart of southern ideology. Regardless, southern women still saw some movement of a shift from the acceptance of male authority. This shift is representative of the mid-19th century feminist movements which occured at the time. The mid-19th century feminist movements empowered women to break norms and change for reform, and the impact of the movement is seen in the Civil War as the feminist movement gained momentum, likely influencing and empowering women to help with the war and its efforts. Alongside this f ormed mentality of women empowerment, some women were devoted to joining or aiding war efforts as a byproduct support for or patriotism to the North or South. Of course, this decision was heavily determined by secessionist or abolitionist views. Even so, most women faced obstacles to join war efforts on the front. Women were prohibited by Army regulations to join as a soldier. Those who wanted to serve as battlefield nurses often faced opposition from family, once again confined by gender roles. Nonetheless, many still sought to serve in a capacity. Some assumed masculine names and disguised themselves as men to fight on the battlefield. Its approximated that 250 women were in the ranks of the Confederate army despite both armies, Union and Confederacy, holding no regard or acknowledgment that women served as soldiers. There are some documented instances of women soldiers being discharged. For instance, John Williams of the Seventeenth Missouri Infantry of Company H was a nineteen-year-old soldier who was subsequently discharged after being discovered as a woman. Another instance is of a Mary Scaberry who enlisted as a private at the age of seventeen who was discovered to be a female after being treated at a hospital for f ever. Like Williams, she was discharged after discovery. Yet, not all women soldiers were quickly discovered with a few being documented to have lasted in the ranks. Now, compared to wartime nurses, women soldiers were not as contributive to the overall outcome of battle as after all, they were only a considerably small number and inferior to the number of men serving. Prior to the Civil War, most nurses in the United States were men. As a result of an influx of injured men, a need for more nurses arose, and women were considered and given the greenlight to serve in the capacity. Most notably, Dorothea Dix who was an administrator in Union military hospitals during the war heavily advocated for female nurses and paved the path for women nurses and led the recruitment and interviews of female candidates. Once again, Dixs promotion of female nurses and women themselves signing up and volunteering to become nurses is a portrayal and result of the feminist movements and women empowerment. The exact number of women nurses during the war is hard to establish but many historical accounts estimate two thousand on the Union and Confederacy. A few prominent women nurses during the period of the war were Mary A. R. Livermore, Margaret Breckenridge, Helen Louise Gilson, Katherine Wormeley, Annie Wittenmyer, the Woolsey Sisters, and Mother Bickerdyke. In company to these names are a series of photographic prints of Civil War nurses, mostly unidentified. The responsibilities of these nurses varied. Regardless, women nurses had to keep up with the strict demands that their job dictated. To add to this, bureaucracy sometimes hampered their efforts and deprived nurses to provide personal care to the soldiers with one nurse, Harriet Eaton, writing how she was more than ever dissatisfied with this way of working. Regularly, women nurses were responsible for the overall order of a ward, attend to their patients, assist patients with their correspondence, supervise the diets of patients, and administer drugs and stimulants. Evidently, women nurses contributed a great part in the humanitarian aspect of the war, attending not only to wounded soldiers but also to prisoners of war. Without women nurses, there would have continued to be a shortage and lack of nurses and as a consequence, threaten the wellbeing and lives of soldiers requiring medical attention. Though, beyond fulfilling the roles of nurses and disguising themselves into battle, women also served as an important yet unknown role: intelligence operatives. In any war, intelligence is an essential component to any party of the war, and the Civil War is no exception to that. The North and South both valued the collection of intelligence because of the power such information could result in an otherwise unexpected outcome, especially in a battle. The field of espionage was extremely dangerous and risky. The traditional punishment for captured spies was death by hanging. During the war, the Union and Confederate Congresses permitted courts-martial the power to try and punish spies by death. For the most part, men engaged in scouting and military reconnaissance. Male spies did exist and were successful and effective, however, most men in the field of espionage were seen as untrustworthy and considered a risk. Women on the other were greatly suited for espionage because of societys lingering gender roles and conceptions. A lady would be the last person expected to be involved in engaging in such a line of work. On top of this, women were able to exploit men and get behind enemy lines easier than their male counterparts. Female spies coexisted in the Union and Confederacy as both sides saw the necessity in military intelligence. On the Northern side, Sarah Emma Edmonds served as a spy for the Union. For the South, Maria Belle Boyd and Rose ONeal Greenhow spied for the Confederacy. After hearing about the start of the Civil War, Sarah Edmonds felt a patriotic duty to take action which prompted her to join the war under an alias as Frank Thomas by disguising herself as a male and signing up for a male field nurse position. Edmonds continued until being reassigned as a mail carrier and later volunteered for an open position as a spy under Union General McClellan. One of her first missions involved her darkening her skin and posing as a slave in a Confederate military camp. There, she eavesdropped on conversations where she was able to gather intelligence on the troops size and weapons which the Confederates planned to use in Yorktown. She infiltrated the Confederate army twice more under the disguise of an Irish peddler and once again as an African American in a Confederate Army camp. In the camp, she was able to take documents from the jackets of officers. Edmonds career in espionage ended short after being hospitalized because of malaria and spent the rest of t he war working as a hospital nurse. One of the most notorious and successful Civil War spies is Rose ONeal Greenhow. After marrying a State Department official, Robert Greenhow, Robert and Rose became influential figures in the capitol. Her husbands position opened Greenhow to important political figures where she frequently socialized with them. After the war broke out, Greenhow was recruited to spy for the Confederacy after being asked by Virginias Governor, John Letcher, who had established a spy network in Virginia. Greenhow learned that on the Union, led by General Irwin McDowell, planned to advance on Confederate forces. Subsequently, she sent Confederate General Pierre-Gustave Toutant de Beauregard warnings of the Union plans to advance by concealing messages in a discrete and unique manner. Once received, Beauregard requested that President Davis order General Joseph E. Johnston to station his troops to Bull Run. This move reinforced Confederate positions and troops, allowing for the Confederacy to secure a win on one of the wars first major battles.

Cinderella Syndrome Essay Example For Students

Cinderella Syndrome Essay Cinderella SyndromeI think the time has come for someone to write Cinderella: The Sequel. How did we get here? In 1697, French writer Charles Perrault updated an age-old fairy tale about a young woman named Cinderella to appeal to his contemporaries, French nobility and bourgeoisie. So many of the early versions of the tale boasted a very resourceful young woman who played an active role in her destiny. Perrault, however wrote his Cinderella as a well-mannered, docile, selfless women who would fit seamlessly with the ideal 17th century upper-class society. Historically, fairy tales have reflected the values of society in which they were written or revised mirroring its preoccupations, obsessions, ambitions, and shortcomings. What do these updates say about our cultures view of women and marriage? It was this version that Walt Disney made famous in the 1950s and to which feminists strongly reacted to in the 1960s and 1970s and ultimately co-opting the story to their own needs. What do these updates say about our cultures view of women and marriage? In her famous poem, Cinderella, Ann Sexton mocks the happily ever after. Cinderella and the prince lived, they say, happily ever after, like two dolls in a museum case that was never bothered by diapers or dust.Todays teenage girls have been brought up by women who read Sexton and her peers and who have taught their daughters that they can want it all, marriage, career, family. But can they have it all? I feel that this demonstrates, women still walk the tightrope between society competing expectations. Can a woman maintain her own identity while falling for her prince? As I imagine it, wed joined by Cinderella and the Handsome Prince shortly after they returned from their honeymoon. We would see them discover how different their tastes and priorities were when they go shopping to furnish the palace. We would see them run up bills and debts by trying to do much too fast, and theyd fight about whose fault their extravagan ces had been. Common sense and love would prevail. Theyd get on a budget and the storm would pass. A couple of years into the marriage, the Handsome Prince would get involved with a merger and acquisitions of the neighboring county, and hed be gone a lot on business trips. The stress and loneliness of long separations would lead to disagreements, but again love would prevail. Then a child would be born to Cinderella and the Prince meaning more stress. The child would be diagnosed with a learning disability and Cinderella and the Prince would each wonder whether the cause might have been the others having parties too hard in their younger days. Their feelings of guilt and blame would generate into quarrels. A second child would be born. More changes and more stress. Cinderellas mother in-law would sometimes interfere and criticize their parenting. Bickering would continue and get worse. Then Cinderella and the Handsome Prince would go to a marriage counselor. They tried to learn to appreciate each others different points of view. They also, tried to learn how to cope with change and stress. The moral of the story would be that in order to live happily ever after, Cinderella and the Prince made drastic mistake to view romance and love being interchangeable words. My first and most shocking discovery was that romance deals in fantasy rather than reality. Romance depends on the setting the weather, your moods and expectations, it depends on _______except commitment. Love, on the other hand depends on nothing but commitment! When you _______ the fact that we live in a world that is always changing, it is easy to see how romance cannot meet the demands of real life. Romance is a weak substitute for love. You can see this by the countless number of broken and bitter hearts, not to mention the soaring divorce rate. .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .postImageUrl , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:hover , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:visited , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:active { border:0!important; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:active , .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4553b0b1305752981c972543f6617b9b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Virgin Active Strategy EssayLikewise, the women of Sex and the City were celebrated for being smart, accomplished, and independent, yet they still longed to be swept away by their Prince.
